Hunters Hall
We arose late upon the Saturday morning and quickly decided that drill would not take place, due to the absence of the Sgt of Pike. Imagine my disappointment when I received 2 messages from him saying he was on his way and would be with us in time for the battle. With the rain falling harder there was only one thing to do – head for the beer barn! Looking at the people present I realised I would not be fighting in the front rank, after a couple of good pints I managed to put things in perspective. If I wanted to fight down the front I would have to kill all those who stood in my way. I mentally drew up the list … Owen, Blabber and Cliff. I finished my last pint then headed back to the campsite as there were now only 15 minutes left to form up
Despite best efforts I had been allocated a spot in the 2 nd rank. Behind Owen! Blabber was just to my right but difficult to reach, while Cliff was off to my left. As we went into Blews for the first push Owen’s left leg mysteriously gave way! I thought my chance had come, but I wanted more. A few pushes later Cliff suffered a back injury in unusual circumstances and had to retire. That left only Blabber to destroy then the Pike Block would be mine and tomorrow the Army. I tried elbowing, gouging and even pushing him into the enemy but to no avail …. Why wouldn’t he fall over like the others? Was he some kind of superman or just plain lucky? We were now down to 8 men and I had to put my evil plan on hold, for if we lost one more person we would be unable to continue.
We were up a trifle earlier on the Sunday and undertook drill; with Owen and Cliff unable to play I was in the front rank! Yes I had made it but I still wanted more…. How could I dispose of the Sgt and seize his place? As we were down on numbers we were bolstered by a file of the King’s Guard headed by Kaiser Bill. The battle was soon joined and we facing Blews. I had to take my opportunity to remove Blabber from the block. Once again I elbowed, gouged and nudged him but he still wouldn’t go down! All too soon the battle was over and it was time to dismantle the tent and head for home. Blabber asked if he could follow us home to save him some driving, here’s another chance I thought, loose him in the wilds of Norfolk, nobody would ever know what had befallen him…Look out Blabber!!
